ARPSC Meeting Minutes March 17, 2008
Call to Order
  • Tom - KC8NJK at 19:03
  • Trent Atkins (KD8HQB), Lansing EMD attending
  • 24 people in attendance
  • Tom reminded us the purpose of these meetings is a celebration of our activities.
Old Business
  1. FEMA certification spreadsheet was passed around for all to review. If you are missing certifications, please call Tom (KC8NJK) and let him know of your plans to complete the missing courses.
  2. A logo for our group was selected by group vote at the last meeting and was passed around for all to see. Guy (KC8SLJ) designed the logo. It is now being created into a vector file for use by different graphics programs.
  3. The Lansing/Ingham ARPSC net meets each Monday evening at 8:00 on the 145.39 repeater. Please check in when possible. We are working to shorten the length of the net when possible.
  4. The PROX card readers are being installed in the ICSD building. Once the readers are working, 7 or 8 LARPSC RACES members close to the building will be issued cards for staffing the EOC.
  5. Dennis (KB8ZQZ) has been in contact with Jeff Kludy, City of Lansing Radio Lab regarding a location for the repeater. The equipment has been moved to the Livingston group for programming. Dennis is applying for a new, unique FCC call sign for the repeater as required by the D-Star architecture. MEPIN continues to be a higher priority than the D-Star system.
  6. No updated from EAS/Warning Alert Policy Group. The radar data provided by WLNS will no longer be available due to budget cutbacks. Lansing EMD has purchased 2 GRLevel3 licenses for retrieving data from the NWS radars. Anyone can purchase the GRLevel3 program for $79 and run it on your own home computer. Look at the LARPSC web site for the link. Ben demonstrated the GRLevel3 program using his laptop and the room’s video projectors. Due to our distance from the Grand Rapids radar, the NWS radar will not display any activity below approximately 3000' in the Lansing area.
  7. Another work session by Dennis (KB8ZQZ) and Dave (K8QH) at the MEPIN site. Duplexer mounted and cabinets prepared for the grounding system.
  8. Tom (KC8NJK) led a Saturday morning work session cleaning and organizing the Lansing EOC. There is still a lot to do but the shelves were organized and some old, broken computer equipment, boxes and miscellaneous papers sent to the trash.
New Business
  1. Pictures for City of Lansing ID cards were taken at the meeting.
  2. The Skywarn class at LCC west is full. We currently have 162 signed up. There is room for up to 200. Typically 5-10% sign up but don't show up for the class. LCC will provide lunch for 150-160. Walk-ins will be accepted. Please check the Skywarn Training page. Thanks LCC!
  3. The presentation by Rob Dale, WLNS meteorologist was very informative at the March CMARC meeting. Kaz Fujita will give a presentation on Mid-Michigan earthquakes at the April meeting.
  4. Work continues on the LARPSC database. Ben (WX8BEN) is the primary designer of the database with Dennis (KB8ZQZ) providing support.
  5. The new ATV equipment continues to arrive. When assembled, this will provide 5 ATV kits. Please review the LARPSC web site for upcoming activities that use ATV. MEPIN continues to be the higher priority in completion of projects.
  6. Curt (KC8QYV) has volunteered to lead the ARRL Field Day display of our ARPSC skills and talents. Please contact Curt with ideas and offer to help him with the demonstrations. Ben (WX8BEN) is coordinating the WLNS Storm Tracker van at the site and will set up a computer with demonstration software.
  7. The next AEC planning meeting will be on March 26 at 18:00 hrs. We will continue to develop goals and policies for our group. Contact any AEC with comments or suggestions.
  8. The City of Lansing EMD will purchase a new 10x10 canopy tent for use by our group. It will be labeled with the group name and be used to help keep staff out of the elements when we have a deployment.
  9. Mike (N8OBU) has installed another remote link at the David St. tower that interfaces to the Central Michigan Amateur Network (CMAN). This linked repeater system has multiple features and functions. Visit the CMAN web site at for more details.
